The Xbox 360 has its own cooling systems that should be able to prevent the GPU as well as the other components inside the box to overheat. However, it happens and people don’t really know why it does. You need to understand that there are many factors that may contribute to overheating. Here are some ideas on why Xbox 360 suffers from overheating when it really shouldn’t because of the built-in cooling systems.

First of all, many people want to put their Xbox 360 in a display cabinet and operate it from there. So, avoid operating the Xbox 360 unit in an enclosed space. As much as possible, always play with your Xbox 360 with it placed in a well-ventilated area. This will help get the heat out of the unit and also get cool air inside the unit.

Another factor is dust. You have to remember that dust can accumulate inside the Xbox 360 and on the cooling unit and fans. This will make the cooling systems of the Xbox 360 inefficient and in some cases the cooling systems will stop working altogether because of the accumulation of dust.

To solve this problem, try to get your Xbox 360 cleaned inside and out regularly. This will prevent the accumulation of dust, which will be able to prevent overheating.

Microsoft’s Xbox 360 ‘freezing problem’

Microsoft has been downplaying reports of problems with the Xbox 360 — reports that surfaced almost immediately after the next-gen console first went on sale.

But there’s an interesting post in our Technology forum from a user who says he has an Xbox 360 that locks up, and that Microsoft’s customer support staff is well aware of the issue:

But, it immeidately gave problems. After about 30 minutes of gameplay, the screen would freeze. No error message or error lights appeared. After powering off and restarting, I could only play for three to ten minutes before it would freeze again. It would do this on any game at any random point.

I did not report this to Microsoft immediately thinking this sounded like an overheating problem since it would work fine for 30 minutes again if you let it cool off. But, after experimenting showed no improvement, I called Microsoft. After only one or two questions, they told me I would need to send it in. At this point, I knew either I had a bad customer service rep or MIcrosoft knew what the problem was. I asked for a supervisor. He said that it was not an overheating problem and there was no troubleshooting that we could do. I pressed him that he must know what the issue is and he finally said “somehing to do with the DVD-ROM or something on that order.” When I called back to ask whether to send the power supply in, she asked if I have “the freezing problem”. So, it is apparently a common problem. As an aside, my manufacture date shows Oct 21.

Overall, he’s happy that Microsoft is being responsive, including paying to ship the console both ways. But could Microsoft have been pro-active? As quickly as these issues showed up on the street, shouldn’t they have been picked up in testing? Or was the Xbox 360 rushed to market too early?
