Xbox Indie Games get new pricing structure, improved update system

From xboxindies.com:
[QUOTE]
Microsoft has begun the transition to Xbox LIVE Indie Games with an update today to the XNA Creator’s Club website. The full details of the update can be found in this post, but the parts that really matter to consumers are the following:

* Japanese and German Creators can now submit Indie Games. So hopefully we’ll see some of those crazy Japanese shoot-em-ups. Or maybe the next Cave Story will find its way to Xbox LIVE Indie Games.
* Update notifications! Finally you will get a nice prompt when starting an Xbox LIVE Indie Game if that game has an update. Then you can do a quick update and know you have the latest version.
* New pricing. Xbox LIVE Indie Games sheds the old pricing system for a new three tier system: 80 MS Points (about $1 USD), 240 MS Points (about $3 USD), and 400 MS Points (about $5 USD). Developers are able to change price as they want, but as is all 200 MS Point games will be automatically moved to the 80 MS Point price point if the developer does not choose another price.

Microsoft, Xbox 360 Division See Revenue Declines

From gamasutra.com:
[QUOTE]
Tech giant and Xbox creator Microsoft’s fourth quarter ended with revenue 17 percent down to $13.10 billion, and profits down 29 percent to $3.05 billion.

The company’s Entertainment and Devices Division, which contains its games business, as well as the Zune and other miscellaneous items, saw a 25 percent year-over-year fourth quarter revenue decrease to $1.19 billion.

But this primarily reflected shrinking Zune and Mediaroom revenue — Xbox 360 platform and PC game revenue decreased $110 million or 12%. The company shipped 1.2 million Xbox 360 consoles in the quarter, slightly down compared with 1.3 million Xbox 360 consoles during the same timeframe last year.

In documents released alongside its financials, Microsoft noted that its software attach rate is 8.6 games per console and “growing.” Finally, the company says that Xbox Live membership is now up to a total of 20 million.

Preview Program Emails are being sent out

From majornelson.com:
[QUOTE]
We’re in the process of sending notification emails out to the first group of people for the Xbox LIVE Update Preview Program. Please check your email (and spam folder…just in case) to see if you were selected. If we stay on schedule, those selected should receive a prompt to accept the update later today/tonight.

We’ll be sending another wave of notifications later this week, but we are holding registration open a bit longer to make sure everyone has a chance to participate. If you signed up but did not receive a mail yet, please head over to the connect site and review your information to make sure it is correct. I am being told that there are quite a few people did not properly complete the survey. If this is the first you are reading about the Preview Program, go ahead and sign up and you may be chosen to participate before the update is released on August 11th.

Update: Sign in to the connect site to see if you are accepted, since many of you did not opt-in to allow us to send you emails, or your email was not properly record in the system.

THQ Boss Says Project Natal Will Be Out In 2010

From kotaku.com:
[QUOTE]
Speaking during his company’s earnings get-together earlier today, Farrell (boss of publisher THQ) - presumably speaking with some degree of knowledge on the subject, what with his company making games for the console - said the 360’s motion-sensing camera peripheral will be out “late next year.” Which is exactly what everybody has been thinking, but hey, it’s nice hearing somebody put it on record, even if they’re not a Microsoft employee that’s able to give us a timeframe we can take to the bank.

Joystiq Interview: Last.fm on Xbox Live

From xbox.joystiq.com:
[QUOTE]
Read Yeung’s take from the Last.fm side of the deal, as she discusses a range of topics, including why her company is better than Pandora, its social media plans, and how audio scrobbling works in APB.

* Is the Last.fm functionality that’s coming to Xbox Live the same functionality you get on the website? Previously, there was a rather wonky way to access Last.fm through the Media Center. What about now?
* A little bit of yes and no. I think, yes, it will be the Last.fm experience that users are accustomed to, and that idea of the recommended music and the personalized radio stations, and as per our new radio page, that kind of multi-sensory visual experience. So that will be the same in terms of the core experience.
I guess what will be different is obviously we are going to work with Xbox and take advantage of being on another platform and take advantage of what that platform offers. And secondly, because it is in the living room now versus on your PC, it is going to have a different user interaction experience. So all those things will be optimized for it to be on the Xbox platform and be in the living room, but ultimately it is that Last.fm experience that our users, and probably now new Xbox users, value.

* Will the service be available to all Xbox users, or is it specific to certain regions? We’re guessing it’ll be available in the UK, since Last.fm is based in the UK …
* Right. Last.fm is a global service, so we will be available in the US. We are obviously looking at other territories as well, given both the brands are quite global in nature, but that has yet to be determined.

* Will you be able to log into Last.fm on your computer and see if any of your friends there are also Xbox Live users, and vice versa? Will your accounts be tied together?
* That is definitely really interesting, and that is definitely one of the reasons why Xbox is so attractive to us in the first place, because there is that big community angle to Xbox Live. And as you know, the platform is community driven. So in the future, being able to really marry those communities more and have that be transparent is definitely
something that we want to think about.
But in the first iteration of this experience, it is really about getting Last.fm up and running in an appropriate way for that living room experience. So those types of community integrations, we know we have talked about it obviously, and it is something that seems obvious that we should be doing in the future, but that really will not be in the first implementation.

Microsoft Says Still No Blu-ray Addon Plans for the Xbox 360

From teamxbox.com:
[QUOTE]
What happened to Toshiba? The Japanese corporation announced its exit of the HD DVD business and now, a year and half later, it is completely admitting the success of Blu-ray Disc by announcing plans to manufacture and sell Blu-ray Disc players. Toshiba plans to sell Blu-ray Disc players by the end of the year and will consider the production of Blu-ray Disc recorders.

Peter Moore left the door open once. Microsoft has denied a Blu-ray Disc drive several times. Following Toshiba’s announcement, we contacted Microsoft just to find out if they changed their mind. A Microsoft spokesperson provided the following statement:

“As we have stated before, we have no plans to introduce a Blu-ray drive for Xbox 360. We have a long-standing high definition strategy that runs across gaming and premium content, and it’s a strategy that continues to pay off for us. Today, we offer the largest library of blockbuster games and offer a growing library of nearly 20,000 movies and TV episodes on Xbox LIVE Video Marketplace (more than 5,000 in HD). In addition, people have access to 12,000 films and TV episodes on Netflix Instant watch. And coming this fall, Xbox LIVE will launch digital movies with instant on 1080p HD streaming so you can experience the best video quality with no disc, no download and no delay. “
